Today begins national police week, it begins with Peace Officers Memorial Day. Many of the police today started their shifts with heavy hearts. The holiday was signed into effect in October of 1962. The National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial was dedicated in October of 1991. This is a very somber day for law enforcement across the country. Though it wasn’t until 1992 that it became to the custom to fly the flag at half staff to begin the week.
When you see a flag at half staff this week, remember the men and women who gave their life to their communities. Their families and friends sit with heavy hearts as well. As of May 15th 2017 there have been 48 deaths this year. The number is growing. Give a moment of your time today to these men, women, and their families.
